Do-It-Yourself Birthday Cakes

If you’re the do-it-yourself type, then when birthdays come around, you’re no doubt looking for ways to create your own great looking and great tasting birthday cake.  But the traditional iced cake can get old. If you want something original, something that can match a unique party theme, or just look cool and different on its own, then here are some great ideas for unique and fun homemade birthday cakes.

First, a great theme for a party is a ladybug theme.  Making a cute ladybug cake is easy.  All you need is one smaller round cake for the head, and a larger, dome-shaped cake for the body.  Using red, pink, white or black icing, you can easily decorate this to look just like these adorable little bugs.

Next, for some classic Disney style at your party, you can make a Mickey or Minnie Mouse birthday cake.  Again, this is a very easy design that uses circular cakes.  Use one large cake for the head, and two smaller cakes for the ears.  You can also easily find Minnie and Mickey-shaped cake pans online.  Once you have the basic shape, drawing in the details of the face with icing is easy.

Finally, for a simple way to create a cake using any character or image that you want, you can bake a regular sheet cake, and then print out the image that you want to put on the cake.  Use your computer or a printing service to blow the image up to the ideal size, and then cut it out and trace the outline onto the top of the cake.  If you have trouble drawing in the details freehand, then you can continue to cut pieces out of the image, and trace them onto the cake.  Once you have the image, then fill it in with whatever color icing you need.
